The Green Team

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a year-round campaign on a relevant environmental topic that culminates during Earth Week. Our ongoing focus is recycling in the cafeteria and sharing facts about the environmental campaign for the year, with questions discussed each week. This motivates the Holmes children to think, engage and research answers for the following week. We post the answers on the bulletin board.

Some examples include:
Break the Bag Habit / Plastic Awareness – We discussed how much plastic we use and how plastic bags get dumped in our oceans. Ultimately, discussing the importance of re-usable bags. We had kids braid plastic bags into brackets as a reminder to “Break the Bag Habit.”

Skip the Straw – We discussed how plastic straws are harmful to our environment and most importantly, to our marine life. A nine-year-old boy in VT, Milo Cress, started the “Skip the Straw” movement which we used as a role model to show elementary school children the power of young people’s voices and being persuasive.

Every Drop Counts – Discussion focused on water conservation and how much water is wasted every day. We also discussed the amount of clean, drinkable water is extremely small. The campaign will discuss drought and animals that can live on very little water, but most people and animals need lots of water to live. This campaign started 2019/2020, but was not completed due to the pandemic. We plan to resume this program in April 2021.
